Hirsutism is a condition that affects women and implies the fact that they have excessive and unwanted hair on body parts which are not supposed to be hairy. When women grow hair on their face, back or chest they are clearly suffering of hirsutism. There are various causes of this condition and it is generally not life threatening. However, if it occurs out of a sudden and the hair growth is rapid, it can signalize a serious medical condition, like a tumor.
The cause of excessive and unwanted hair in women is hormonal imbalance. Women normally have a certain amount of male hormones in their bodies. When the testosterone and androgen levels are too high, hirsutism, as well as other symptoms, might occur. These symptoms include acne, deep voice, irregular menstrual periods and excessive weight. There seems to be a genetic predisposition in what concerns hirsutism. It is also a symptom of the polycystic ovary syndrome or of the Cushion’s disease. In some cases, especially when it occurs suddenly and aggressively, hirsutism might signalize cancer or a tumor.
Sometimes certain medication can cause hirsutism. In this case, the condition goes away if the doctor agrees to end or to change the faulty treatment. Steroids, glucocorticoids, danazol or minoxydil can lead to grow of excessive and unwanted hair in women. The cause of hirsutism rarely remains unidentified because blood tests are performed and the levels of male hormones are easily established. All women with hirsutism have abnormal hormonal levels.
Even though it is not dangerous for one’s health condition, excessive or unwanted hair in women is very embarrassing. If the condition is not very severe, bleaching the hair might be a solution for some women. This might make the hair less visible, but it only works in women that are not very affected by hirsutism. There are also methods of removing the unwanted hair, but they also have disadvantages and women tend to avoid them. Shaving is not painful, but it makes the hair grow thicker. Waxing is a more efficient hair removal method, but it is very painful and it might cause redness and irritation of the skin.
Women with hirsutism might also choose laser hair removal. This procedure provides permanent results, although it is pretty expensive and it requires some time. It uses electric current to cause permanent damage to the follicles. Multiple sessions are needed until all unwanted hair is removed and irritation and swelling might also occur.
